Time to get in touch with your inner self, Toronto. The Chopra Yoga Center opens down at the Harbourfront District this weekend with free – yes! I said free – yoga all weekend starting Friday, December 14.
What’s to love?
I just checked out the center out at the media preview this morning and there are a few things to get excited about. I love the fact that the yoga center has an infrared sauna, the type of sauna said to root out those nasty deep-seated toxins, and I enjoyed my complimentary meditation class (except for the really loud heater that came on midway and distracted me. Then again, I’m easily distracted so maybe that’s just me.)
There are a few visual details worth feasting on. The row of illuminated chakra symbols along one hallway, for example, gives the 6,500 square foot centre a light-filled groovy vibe, and the natural stone tile and wood accents in the change rooms instil a contemporary calm. My favourite touch is the massive circular door of ancient-looking wood that opens onto the hot yoga room – a conversation starter if I ever saw one.
What makes Chopra Yoga special?
According to Vivian Wong, Studio Director for Toronto’s Chopra Yoga Center, the Center is a unique addition to Toronto. “What differentiates us is that we incorporate Dr. Deepak Chopra’s Seven Spiritual Laws of Success into all of our practices. We want to bring more mindfulness and awareness to our practice and to our lives.”
Each day deals with a specific law, so while you’re yoga-ing you’ll get some tips on how to integrate the law into your practice and your life. Today (Monday) for example focuses on The Law of Giving and Receiving. Personally I’m waiting for Wednesday, The Law of Least Effort, but Sunday, The Law of Pure Potentiality sounds good, too.
A healing pedigree
The centre was founded in partnership with that wellness superstar himself, Dr. Deepak Chopra, co-founder of the Chopra Center for Wellbeing. Unless you have been meditating in a hermit’s cave in Umbria for the last few decades you’ll have heard the name. A renowned authority in the field of mind-body healing and a New York Times best-selling author, he’s written more than 64 books on mind-body health, quantum mechanics, spirituality and peace.
About the Chopra Yoga Center
The center will hold a variety of classes ranging from hot hatha, power vinyasa and Pilates to hip-hop yoga. Other wellness services are on the menu including naturopathic medicine, registered massage therapy and Ayurveda, with three dedicated treatment rooms – one with a front row view of Lake Ontario.
